The first settlers moved into the area in the 1780s.  Most of the earliest settlers were French ... Acadian, French-Canadian, and directly from France.  When the Louisiana territory was purchased by the U.S. in 1803, in influx of American colonists followed.  When parishes were first deliniated, the area was part of Lafourche parish.  In 1822, the area was divided and the parish of Terrebonne was formed.  Houma was founded in 1834 and became the parish seat.
In the 19th century, the seafood and timber industry became prominent.  These were joined in the 20th century by the oil & natural gas industries.
